8 books you should read this Autumn 2019

Hello book nerds, its yo girl emilia and I am here with another BOOK blog post! Dang-Diggity dang! I will be recommending 8 books and book series for you to read this autumn, especially those nights when you're curled up next to the fireplace.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
Spooky season is a big part of Autumn that lots of people, including myself, love. I always get excited for Halloween, so reading a "creepy" series is perfect. Don't worry, this isn't a horror series, it's more of a mystery. This book is about a
boy named Jacob, who is told strange tales of children with peculiar traits by his grandfather. His grandfather visited the house during WWII and even had pictures that made Jacob's head spin. After his grandfather's death, Jacob decides to go on a journey to find Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake
If you are a huge fantasy snob like me, I highly recommend this book series. I loved the world-building, explanation of powers, and the characters that each have their differences and unique capabilities. The book is about a set of triplets, separated at birth due to tradition. Each sister was sent to a different family/house to live with and learn about the different morals and powers that they are
expected to wield. Mirabella is an Elementalist, Katharine is a poisoner and Arsinoe is a naturalist. As they grow, they each deal with issues and once they reach a certain age, they have to fight to the death to become Queen. This book is filled with all sorts of twists and turns and lovable characters that you root for!

I'll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson
Also, this cover is beautiful!
If you enjoy art, poetry, or a good story about family, I really recommend this book. Jandy Nelson tells the story while shifting from past to present, and as you read the book you can slowly put the puzzle pieces and feel drawn into the book more. This book is about a set of twins, Noah and Jude, who were extremely
close when they were young. After a shaking event, the twins are no longer speaking to one another. Jude then meets someone and starts to question her past actions and is concerned over Noah. Their childhood is told through the perspective of Noah, and their present, teen years told by Jude. The writing is exquisite and makes you want to recreate Vincent Van Gogh's "Starry Night".

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys
This is a historical fiction novel that I read SUPER fast because I loved it THAT much. I felt emotionally connected to the characters and I was hungrily reading each chapter,
wanting to know what was going to happen next. This is about 4
refugees trying to escape Nazi Germany on a passenger ship. Each person has their own secrets, each person has their own lies, the question is how do they all connect? I am not joking when I say this, but one of the main characters is a Polish girl named Emilia, and when I read it, I started having a personal identity crisis. But I highly recommend this book if you are a history buff, or love getting your heart torn out. :)
me when I saw that one of the
main characters is named Emilia
Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin
Another WWII book. BUT WAIT! This one is different. This is a book told as if the Axis powers WON WWII. Set in the 1950s, as a way to celebrate the victory
of the war and as a celebration of unity between the Third Reich and Imperial Japan, Hitler hosts a trans-continental motorcycle race. We follow our main character, Yael, who is a survivor of one of the many death camps, and was also experimented on by the Angel of Death. She is hired by a rebel group to win the race and assassinates Hitler, who personally meets the winner at the end of the competition. I really enjoyed this book because it goes all around the world for the race and because it gives you the idea of what an alternate universe would look like if the Nazi's won WWII.

The Thousandth Floor by Katherine McGee
THIS COVER!!!!
If you are a fan of Gossip Girl or 90210, this is perfect for you. Set in the near future, the wealthy elite live in a huge skyscraper where technology is mind-boggling. This book is about several high schoolers, all from different economic
and social backgrounds, who get involved with drama that eventually lead to murder. Who is the one to get murdered? What secrets are they holding? Well, you have to figure that out, my dudes. Katherine McGee is actually from Houston and does all of her working in Houston, so you know we HAVE to support our local authors! But in all seriousness, I really enjoy her writing style. It is very detailed and she does a great job with imagery.

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
Ah yes, my doom. I read this book series earlier this year and the concluding
book is coming out in November and I am EXCITED! This is another fantasy series set in present time that involves bloodshed, strategy, war, and romance. The perfect romance to get me to not put the book down. We follow Jude, a teenager who was taken away from her murdered parents with her twin sister, Taryn, to the world of the Faerie. As a human, she is in the minority and is often oppressed, which makes her more motivated to train to become a spy and gain her own power. Secrets are spilled, pasts are uncovered, and twists occur. I enjoyed the first book and LOVED the second book, so just keep reading you will enjoy it.

The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness
Many books are told from the perspective of the "chosen one" and how they were destined to save the world. But what about those who were not? The normal people living their lives while all of the aliens are invading earth, or the ones not
fighting zombies, just the people simply living their lives? This is the book about them. While a random girl is the "chosen one" and saving the world, we follow Mikey and his friends on just the journey of graduating high school and the worries of going to prom. It is a sweet story about the melancholy feelings of finishing high school, falling in love, and little twists of magic. I like how Patrick Ness still adds little paragraphs explaining what is happening in the "chosen one" perspective just so we get both sides of the story.

Thank you so much for reading this blog post! I just read it and realized how many books have the similarities of the main character being a twin or triplet, kinda weird! Anyways, be sure to follow me on Instagram @yogirlemilia where you can tell me some of your recommendations, what you are looking forward to this fall, and just how your day is going! I wish you all the best, cool weather, warm drinks, and good grades :)

love,
